11:20 am - 11:45 am - SRC Rare Earth Processing Facility: A Catalyst for an REE Hub in Saskatchewan
Guest Speaker: Erin Herman, Project Engineering and Operations Director, Rare Earth Element Division - Saskatchewan Research Council
Rare earth elements (REE) are essential materials in constructing many modern technologies. Governments worldwide have deemed REEs to be critical, strategic resources due to their economic and fundamental importance in modern life. Their unique properties underpin the current and future technology on which countries and society will operate. Evolution in the energy sector evidenced by a shift from conventional fossil fuels towards electric base sources combined with net-zero emission goals will double the demand for REEs by 2030. Saskatchewan (Canada), which has plentiful REE deposits, comprehensive mining expertise and decades of experience developing and managing nuclear resources is well positioned to lead the development of the REE processing industry. The Government of Saskatchewan has funded the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) to construct a vertically integrated, fully commercial-scale Rare Earth Processing Facility. This facility will be a catalyst to stimulate the REE resource sector in Saskatchewan and across Canada. It begins to establish an REE processing hub in Saskatchewan; an industry model for future commercial REE initiatives and supply chain development from mine to magnets, from feed to future REE demands.
11:45 am - 12:05 noon - Geological Distribution of Electrical Metals: The Global Nature of the Business
Guest Speaker: Dr. Abani R. Samal, Principal, GeoGlobal LLC
Abstract: All the metals used in the production, storage, and transmission of electricity include copper, nickel, lithium, cobalt, and REEs. Additionally, iron ore and bauxite are needed for the infrastructure needed for the transmission of electricity. This presentation will highlight the non-uniform distribution of these commodities worldwide, which in turn provides an opportunity for all nations to work together for access to various metals through the development of the mining industry for various source minerals.
12:05 noon - 1:00 pm - NETWORKING LUNCH
1:00 pm - 1:20 pm - Li Metal Batteries and EVs: Critical Minerals Focused
Guest Speaker: Dr. Venkataraman Thangadurai, Professor and Associate Head, Dept of Chemistry, University of Calgary
Abstract: Lithium, the lightest metal of the periodic table, has attracted much heavier attention because of its wide range of applications in Li-ion battery, non-linear optics, ceramics, high temperature lubricants, and drugs. Li demand increases day-by-day. The current demand of Li2CO3 (Li ore) is ~160,000 tons per year and is found in the South America, Australia and China. The Li ore supply chain is very crucial for the sustainability of the booming industries like portable electronics, electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage. In this talk, overview of status of Li ion battery technology will presented together with some examples of current research in Author’s group at the University of Calgary. Furthermore, role of other metals on energy storage technology will be discussed.

Guest Speaker: Jason Thompson, Owner, Superior Strategies & Warrior Supplies
Abstract: Canada and the world are in the midst of unprecedented change, so too are our Indigenous People's. The unconscionable truths being uncovered at the Residential Schools, Public and Private calls for more Social, Governance and Environmental Responsibility, as well as the courts upholding treaty land and resource entitlements for many of our Indigenous Communities has created an opportunity for some potentially positive change for all Indigenous People in Canada. Canada is poised for some great opportunities and economic Growth now and in the Future, and the Indigenous People of Canda are just as poised to be a part of this economic prosperity. The difference today from economic opportunities of the past, is we no longer want to be sitting in the backseat or worst eyt the trailer being towed behind this economic engine, we want to be in the driver seat.
